Becoming The Person You Crave To Be
How would your friends or your boss describe you?
Would your spouse, roommate or sibling (those who live with you every day) describe you differently?
Many of us might feel nervous imagining how others would describe us. Their words could be sobering … perhaps even uncomfortably revealing. Yet reflecting on these questions can motivate us to become people worthy of honorable words.
Taking this thought a step deeper, if you consider how you’ve lived so far, how do you believe God would describe you? Wouldn’t it be incredible to hear Him say something like He said about David in Acts 13:22 (ESV):
I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.
I love both parts of this verse. I long for God to see me as someone who pursues His heart – and strives to follow His will.
Yet, I fail miserably at being the person I want to be.
We know David didn’t obey God perfectly. He committed heinous sins, including adultery and arranging for the woman’s husband to be killed. Still, God saw that in his heart, he honestly sought after Him.
How can we develop this kind of devotion?
Read Matthew 22:37 (ESV):
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
Most people find loving God with such intentionality challenging. Yet through His presence working within us, we can choose to love Him with our whole being, even when temptation pulls us in another direction.
We do this one choice at a time – one difficult, deliberate choice at a time.
Meditating on Scripture has kept me from giving up when my constant failures make me want to quit. I find great comfort in knowing that God helps shape both my desire and my ability to follow His will (Philippians 2:13).
Most of all, our heavenly Father’s love for me provides a moment-by-moment example of how I should love and serve those around me, including my friends, coworkers and family. His love for me also becomes my strongest motivation to love Him in return.
I pray constantly that God will shape me into a person after His own heart. It’s no coincidence that the more we seek God’s heart, the more we become someone we want others to see and the kind of person we crave to be.
And most importantly, we become the person God is calling us to be.
