Getting our lives and emotions on track
Your mind is racing. It won’t be long before your boss finds out you’re not as experienced as your resume stated. Or you’re on the verge of calling it quits. Your depression is taking a toll on you, your family and your marriage.
You feel scared. Alone. Powerless.
So … what now? Will you continue doing all the stuff that makes your life more and more chaotic? Or will you do whatever it takes to live a life of integrity? Will you continue letting negative thoughts drive you deeper into despair, even to the brink of insanity? Or will you take control and focus on that which will bring you courage and significance?
The first step may be easier than you think. Last week, we examined Psalm 1:1, which warned us not to align ourselves with people who mock God and His ways. Psalm 1:2 (ESV) goes a step further:
But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.
When was the last time you read and meditated on God’s Word? Perhaps you never have, but you’ve considered starting. Meditating on Scripture throughout the day helps us live honestly. It protects our minds from bombardments of worry and gloom.
If you have meditated on God’s Word, call to mind the peace you experienced when you pondered the words of a Bible passage. How it changed your thinking. Gave you hope and direction. If it’s been a while, how are you doing? Is your life working out?
Reading the Bible and thinking about what it says keeps our lives and our thoughts on track. Furthermore, the more we delight in God’s ways, the more delightful we become. (I assure you – you wouldn’t want to spend time with me if I go too many days without hiding God’s Word in my heart.)
So … get to know your heavenly Father by delighting in His Word – and be changed.
Let’s pray: Father, give us a hunger for Your Word. Create in us a love for You and Your ways that is stronger than our love for ourselves and our ways. Show us every area where we’re not living honorably. And finally, help us delight in Your Word more and more every day until it overshadows all hopelessness and depression. Amen.
