When Temptation Feels Impossible to Resist
How often has a 9.5‑out‑of‑10 recurring temptation defeated you? Each time you give in, the struggle becomes harder. Shame grows as you realize these battles often result from your own choices.
Some struggles feel so private, so painful, so shame‑laden, so unending that we can’t bring ourselves to admit them, even when we desperately need prayer support.
Eventually, our resolve wears thin. We stop memorizing Scripture. We stop talking to God. We stop fighting.
We give up.
If this is where you are, or where you often find yourself, I understand. I’ve felt this way many times over the years.
But please remember Jesus died and rose to give you freedom, truth, comfort, forgiveness, peace and joy.
No matter what happens in our lives, in the world, or in our battles with sin or temptation, we can be certain, deep down, unshakably certain, that God wins in the end. Not only in some things. Not only in the “big” things.
In all things.
This confidence isn’t based on our feelings, our circumstances, or how strong we think we are – not even how strong (or weak) we think our faith is. It’s based on God’s character and promises. We can be confident in God’s final authority over every battle, every enemy, and every outcome.
It’s the kind of confidence Paul describes in Ephesians 6:10: the strength that comes from being united with Christ and empowered by His boundless might. The Amplified Bible, Classic Edition of the Bible says it this way:
Be strong in the Lord [be empowered through your union with Him]; draw your strength from Him [that strength which His boundless might provides].
When I struggled with recurring sin to the point of wanting to give up (and sometimes actually quitting), I’m grateful the Holy Spirit nudged me to pick up my Bible anyway. I began reading and reviewing verses I once knew by heart – and something shifted.
This is what often happens when we stop trying to be strong on our own and instead draw strength from God.
When we lean into Him, even the smallest act of obedience can become a turning point. Because the truth is, we’ll never find lasting satisfaction in anything that leads us toward destruction. Only in Christ do we discover real freedom, genuine truth, deep comfort and full forgiveness.
It’s in Him – and only in Him – that we experience the profound joy of walking in the victory He’s already won for us.
