Procrastination – And God’s Mercies
It’s 1 pm on Saturday at my house. I finally turned off the TV and sat down to write this (hopefully) inspiring column. I already feel better about myself (and my day) simply because I pushed through and took the steps necessary to accomplish something.
But some days are harder to push through than others, aren’t they?
I write several articles about procrastination every year because I hear from so many people who struggle to manage their time. They lack energy and drive and feel guilty for wasting another day.
I get it. Years ago, when I suffered from depression, I barely had the motivation to do anything. I felt judged by people. Even worse, I felt God’s disappointment almost every day. I saw myself as a failure, and the fear of watching my life slide into a worthless puddle of inactivity consumed me.
I hated my life, and I hated myself.
I knew my depression contributed to my low energy. I also knew that if I didn’t begin to accomplish at least some basic daily tasks, I’d continue spiraling downward.
One morning during my quiet time, I read Lamentations 3:22-23 (ESV), which said exactly what I needed to hear from God:
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
After reading these beautiful words, I wanted to hug God—probably because I felt like He was hugging me through those verses. His Word reminded me that He loves me unconditionally.
I don’t know what I would have done without God’s compassionate love during that season of my life. In the days and years that followed, I probably would have given up if His unceasing love hadn’t greeted me each morning. Not once in all those years of struggle did His mercy come to an end.
Although I no longer struggle with depression, I still struggle with managing my time.
If you’re battling procrastination, lack of motivation or just plain laziness, instead of allowing guilt and anxiety to consume you, let’s explore ideas that can help. In future articles, I’ll share practical tips that have made a difference in my life.
In the meantime, I encourage you to meditate on this week’s verse. My prayer is that you’ll come to know God’s steadfast love and mercy.
And that you’ll experience it anew every morning.
What about you?

Oh,how I can relate on both clinical depression followed by hospitalization and procrastination.
I no longer suffer from depression, praise the Lord but procrastination has remained.
I do have a reasonable to do list on my phone which has helped me tremendously but…..
I look forward to hearing more on the subject which will be words of wisdom.
Thanks for taking the time to once again enlighten us.
I’m also happy that I’m no longer being hacked.
Good morning, Sandra! Thank you for stopping by again.
We can pray for each other!
May I ask, besides keeping a to-do list on your phone, what else has worked for you?
I believe when we are honest with ourselves and others, we all have periods in our lives where we procrastinate, but we are always loved unconditionally and there are always new mercies every morning, because that’s God’s promise to God’s children. Even if we don’t suffer from depression, we all have times when we feel down or unmotivated. Here are some more wonderful hugs from our Lord…”But from everlasting to everlasting the loving devotion of the LORD extends to those who fear Him, and His righteousness to their children’s children—“ Psalm 103:17. “A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the loving devotion of the LORD forever; with my mouth I will proclaim Your faithfulness to all generations. / For I have said, “Loving devotion is built up forever; in the heavens You establish Your faithfulness.”” Psalm 89:1-2. “Though the mountains may be removed and the hills may be shaken, My loving devotion will not depart from you, and My covenant of peace will not be broken,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.” Isaiah 54:10. Thanks Sheryl!
